Job Vacancy for Seasonal Watersports Assistant Position:

Working weekends from April to November 2024

About The Club:

Scaling Dam Sailing and Watersports Club is situated in the North Yorkshire Moors between Guisborough and Whitby, on the A171. The club has recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary, and is a forward-thinking club, constantly trying to improve the activities & facilities on offer.

The club is now in need of an enthusiastic Watersports Assistant to support the day-to-day running of club activity. The ideal candidate will have a general interest in watersports and will be a competent sailor.

About The Role:

The purpose of this role is to support regular club activity, including safety boat cover, supporting training courses, running introductory/taster sessions, and helping to maintain the clubs' fleet. This is an active, practical role, and the candidate will be expected to spend a lot of time on the water.

  • Safety cover: The candidate will take an active role in supporting club activity and providing safety cover. This will include: Providing safety cover to all casual watersports users; supporting training courses on the water, in conjunction with the course instructors; supporting the Race Officer with club racing.
  • Training: The candidate will regularly be expected to support sailing and SUP courses, especially on Saturday mornings. Working alongside the course instructor(s) and Duty Senior Instructor, this will involve mark/course laying, safety cover, and teaching.
  • Taster sessions: On occasions the candidate will be required to run sailing taster sessions. This will typically involve taking out a couple of beginners in one of the clubs family dinghies.
  • Facilitating activity: The candidate will be expected to have some basic boat knowledge, to be able to help rectify any minor problems with the club boats as and when they arise. The candidate will assist with the clubs' set-up and pack-up of kit each day for all daily activities, including powerboat preparation and launch/recovery.

Training will be provided to support the candidate into the role.

The candidate will report to the Training Principal, and the Duty Senior Instructor on the day.

An enthusiastic and open-minded approach is required, along with a willingness to perform other jobs within your capabilities to support the general functioning of the club as a whole.

Requirements / Person Specification:

  • This position is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check & satisfactory references
  • You must have good communication skills
  • You will need to be self-motivated, personable, and approachable, able to interact with children, youths and adults alike.
  • Essential Qualifications:
  • *RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • *Current relevant first aid certificate
  • *Competent sailor
  • *Minimum age 16
  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • *RYA Dinghy Instructor (or Assistant)
  • *Driving Licence

Package & Remuneration

This is a new role for the club. The club is prepared to be flexible by offering this as a job share, perhaps between 2 people (regular commitment will be required by the candidate, and regular hours will be honoured by the club).

Training will be provided for the role, candidates are expected to have a reasonable knowledge of sailing and watersports already.

The season will be from April to the end of October (possibly into November). Normal working hours will be Saturdays and Sundays 8:30 to 17:30, being 9 hours inclusive of a 20-minute rest break. Some flexibility is required, and overtime might be available during the school holidays and bank holidays.

Pay rates will be from £9/hr, or the National Minimum Wage / National Living Wage where applicable.
