SCALING DAM SAILING CLUB

2020 AGM

Training Principles Report

First of all I must thank all of the instructors and assistant instructors who have made what could have been a disastrous year for training one to be very proud of.

In no particular order thanks to Phil Dickinson, Carl Wood, Izzy Brining, Chris Eades, Andy Young, Matt Jackson, Deb Hodgson, Nicky Bamford, Lee Hetherington, Nicky Jackson, Phoebe Douglas, Alun Roberts, Al Scoffin, Ian Thompson, Izzy Pearce, Dave Barker, Erin Young, Mia Mack, Tom Hunt, Richard Rigby, Sophie Brining and Harry King.

The year started brightly enough with a First Aid course ensuring all our instructors were fully qualified for the season ahead. No one could have predicted how the season would pan out with only a Powerboat Level 2 course completed before lockdown struck. During the early stages of lockdown a lot of effort went into planning for its eventual easing and the resumption of training. We know from many of the online seminars we joined that most clubs were avoiding running novice courses due to the fear of putting inexperienced sailors in single handed boats. Choosing not to run novice courses would have had a huge impact on our ability to attract new members so we hatched a plan to make use of our Access dinghies for the first day of our RYA Level 1 courses. What a great decision that turned out to be as you will see from the numbers below.

We have welcomed 4 new Assistant Instructors to our ranks, Mia Mack, Erin Young, Tom Hunt and Harry King. Well done to you all.

Paddlesport has been extremely popular and our ability to deliver introduction course for both Paddleboard and Kayak has again enabled us to attract many new members. By the time you read this both Nicky Bamford and Deb Hodgson will be qualified Paddlesport Instructors and also hold Foundation of Safety and Rescue (FSRT) certificates so well done to them.

For those of you interested in the numbers, by the end of the season we have, or will have, put the following numbers of students through our courses.

RYA Level 1: 21 Students
RYA Level 2: 11 Students
RYA Stage 1: 12 Students
RYA Stage 2: 13 Students
RYA Stage 3: 7 Students
RYA Start Racing: 11 Students
RYA Powerboat Level 2: 1 Student
Introduction to Paddleboarding: 54 Students
Introduction to Kayaking: 31 Students
First Aid: 7 Students

A massive thank you goes out to everyone who has helped to make this a year to remember. Also thanks to those who were unable to contribute physically but regularly sent messages of congratulation and support, they were much appreciated.
